Somewhere around 36 weeks, the hospital bag starts looking at you from the corner of the room. Most lists online are long enough to need a second suitcase. You'll use about half of it.
When packing for Baby, this is the shorter version, it's the things you'll reach for in the first day or two and be happy to have. Aim to have it packed by 36 weeks, sooner if you're expecting twins or have been told baby might arrive early.
One tip before you start: pack two bags. A small one for labour that comes in with you, and a bigger one for after that can stay in the car until you're settled on the ward.
Newborns don't need much, but what they wear sits right against brand new skin. Natural fibres breathe and help them regulate temperature, which matters in a hospital room - they are either always too warm or too cool with the air-con.
- 3-4 bodysuits - Cotton or merino - it is your choice. I always found the hospitals to be on the cooler side so I will always recommend and prefer our merino singlet bodysuits.
- Going home outfit - Something cute to pop your little one in. Our kimono style cotton bodysuits and footed leggings are a softer than butter organic cotton and come in a range of unisex colours - so perfect if you are keeping the gender a surprise.
- 2 nightgowns or bundlers - An elasticated bottom makes 2am nappy changes faster. Ours come in a Prem size too. We have these in both merino and organic cotton.
- 2 pairs of footed leggings - Keeps legs and feet covered without socks that fall off - we have both cotton and merino versions available.
- A beanie or hat - Newborns lose heat through their heads, and midwives will usually ask for one. Find ours here.
- Swaddle wraps - Cotton, muslin or merino. Muslin is great for warm days and burp cloth duty, but I would always recommend one merino wool one for sleep.
- A blanket for the car seat and the trip home. Merino Rib Knit Blanket
- Hooded towel and wash cloths - You can never have too many wash cloths, you will use them for everything. Find ours here. Also a hooded baby towel is great if you're staying a few nights.
- Newborn nappies and wipes. Check with your hospital first. Some supply them, most don't.
- Car seat. Installed and checked before you go into labour. You can't leave without it.
Wash everything once before it goes in the bag. It softens the fabric and ensures it's ready to go.
That's it. Pack it, zip it, and put it by the door.
If you're still building baby's first wardrobe, our newborn range is made with organic cotton and merino, made to be washed a lot and passed on.
